In the shadow of the mountain: What the Fest 2016 Recap

DSCN0094

This is months overdue but between a new job and a wedding that’s happening in 17 days, I think I have an excuse.

This was my second year at What the Festival with the same wonderful Struggle Crew. Yes that’s what we’re called because the struggle is real. We don’t have elaborate totems or camps set up. We’re just there to dance, drink and have a good time.

It rained the first day and was so freaking cold, but we put our rain jackets on (this was in Oregon, PNWesterners, we’re prepared for this), and went out to explore. This year was so different from last year because I really had no agenda. We would see who we would see and just float around. I will say JackLNDN & Claptone are at the top of my list. And I am glad I woke up at 2 AM and wandered over to catch some of Claude VonStroke’s set.

I think this is why I love this festival so much. I didn’t need to know half the lineup…I knew it would be good but it was also more about the community and the people you’re surrounded by that make a festival so successful. There’s something magical in the unexpected moments, like when the rain finally cleared and sun suddenly appeared. The entire campground erupted in howls and cheers. It was beautiful.

The final evening, Mother Earth blessed us with a gorgeous sunset and views of both mountains, Mt Hood + Mt Saint Helens.

I love this festival, and I’m so looking forward to it next year, plus some other ones…like Bass Coast and hopefully, Burning Man.
